Remembering JMX

Posted by matt on 31st August 2007

It’s nice to remember how easy it is to use the StandardMBean technique to register almost any object to be controlled via JMX.

PLEAC – Programming Language Examples Alike Cookbook

Posted by Payne on 18th February 2007

The site http://pleac.sourceforge.net/ is a great idea. It’s really nice that the groovy examples are 74% complete. Many thanks to aboutGroovy.com and searchGroovy.org for helping me learn about this.

Oh the 1980s….

Posted by Payne on 19th January 2007

Today I was reminded of the early 1980s. Prime numbers do that for me — primes make me think of palindromic primes and one of the oddest people I’ve ever met. It was very surreal seeing someone with a large stack of densely printed palindromic prime numbers!

Thanks to Ron for the trip down memory lane….

7650384830567 is both palindromic and prime…
34603630643 is both palindromic and prime…
3970174710793 is both palindromic and prime…
7997784877997 is both palindromic and prime…
9341768671439 is both palindromic and prime…
10947274901 is both palindromic and prime…

At least it’s not raining….

[Froederick and Igor are exhuming a dead criminal]
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: What a filthy job.
Igor: Could be worse.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: How?
Igor: Could be raining.

Oh Well….

Posted by Payne on 11th September 2006

It’s good to remember my favorite Peter Green song Oh Well:

I cant help about the shape Im in
I cant sing, I aint pretty and my legs are thin
But dont ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to

Oh well

Now, when I talked to God I knew hed understand
He said, stick by my side and Ill be your guiding hand
But dont ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to

Oh well

Power Corrupts

Posted by Payne on 6th September 2006

For years people have been saying that privacy freaks are, well, freaks who are worrying for nothing.

It’s easy to forget that power corrupts. Then you see a story like “HP admits to pre-texting board members” where HP hired “somebody to impersonate a fellow board member in order to get their phone records.”

It’s good to remember two things:

  1. This was happening at the top level of management. This is not a rogue middle manager who’s watched too many episodes of La Femme Nikita.
  2. From the story “Douglas says what’s unusual about the HP case is that the company got caught.”

COTSE accounts are fairly cheap. Some may say that CALEA is not pure of heart….

Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Bananas

Posted by Payne on 12th July 2006

I don’t know much about food. So I was pleasantly surprised when I had the mashed sweet potatoes with bananas side dish at Naked Fish in Bedford, MA last night. I’m glad the waitress recommended these with the Pan-Seared Mahi Mahi. Yum!
